Trebbia

Macdonald pulled back from the first contacts with the Austro-Russians and drew up his men with their backs to the Trebbia river. On the 18th the Allies attacked all along the line. The French were losing the struggle when Macdonald ordered them to pull back over the river in the dark. Next day he counter-attacked but after heavy fighting the Allies held this attack. Now the Allies put in reserve divisions and the French broke.
